The Happy Dragon Thrift Shop began in 1958 when a mother and daughter team held yard sales to support the Ming Quong orphanage in Los Gatos. They also collected Green Stamps, eventually raising enough for a down payment on the shop’s current building, once a feed and fuel store.
From 1925 to the late 1950s, Ming Quong Homes provided a safe haven for more than 400 Chinese and Chinese American girls. Founded through the efforts of missionary Donaldina Cameron, the home grew out of earlier rescue work in San Francisco’s Chinatown and expanded to multiple campuses to meet changing needs, including the Los Gatos site, which opened in 1934. Over time, the Ming Quong Home evolved to serve all children regardless of race, creed or gender, leaving a lasting legacy of care, education and opportunity.
With donations from the community and the efforts of over 100 volunteers, we raise over $500,000 annually for Pacific Clinics. You will find great prices, a great selection and a community friendly atmosphere in our shop. All proceeds support children’s mental health and family supportive services in Santa Clara County.
